The role:

Mersey Port Health Authority is looking to recruit three Port Health Officers on a permanent basis

We are inviting applications from candidates who are either experienced Environmental Health Officers looking for a new challenge or newly qualified Environmental Health Officers looking to develop their Port Health skills.  To become part of our team, you will need to be enthusiastic, keen to learn and prepared to assist our current team of dedicated personnel in the undertaking of our statutory functions. 

Health controls. Successful candidates will be responsible for enforcing United Kingdom legislation by means of enforcement, advice, guidance and education. Other responsibilities will include the enforcement of food safety legislation, International Health Regulations, including the inspection of vessels, and shellfish classification.

The ideal candidates must be highly organised and comfortable working under pressure, which includes making decisions in accordance with legislative requirements. Excellent communication skills are essential along with the ability to work as part of a team. IT proficiency and familiarity with Microsoft applications are desirable.

The main duties of the post include

  • Monitoring and reviewing all imports of products of animal origin and food not of animal origin including documentary checks, inspection, and sampling of products
  • Conducting verification of certificates of organic products at point of import
  • Undertaking ship sanitation inspections of cruise ships, ferries, merchant vessels, small passenger vessels and pleasure crafts to ensure compliance with UK and international standards.
  • Providing liaison, advice and guidance on communicable disease control matters at the Port of Liverpool and Liverpool John Lennon Airport
